detail

I grew up on the Gulf Coast where plants grow in marshes in abundance; water plants like hyacinth, lotus & water lilies are so pervasive they are sometimes considered a nuisance.
The images of my origins have, quite naturally, permeated my work. Over the years I have used oceans, land, people, pets and flowers as subject matter for my artwork. The common
theme of origins relates these diverse subjects. Each individual carries inside an inward landscape of the imagination.  It is a complex of images that shapes our understanding of life.  My
inward images were shaped partly in childhood and, of course, these experiences have carried through into my perception of my exterior environment and, ultimately, my artwork. My
earliest memories are of planting flowers in the garden under the guidance of my Great Grandmother Rosa.  My love of the shapes and colors of flowers started at age three and has grown
and flourished throughout my life.  I still love digging in the dirt.
Conveying perceived light is one goal of my work.  I work with materials that give light to my images: metallic paints and papers (metal leaf), interference pigments and glazing.
My love of Asian prints, especially Japanese woodblock, has a strong influence on my artwork.  Their simplicity, understatement and clarity achieved through presenting the essence of the
world around us gives the viewer a visual, if sometimes abstract, challenge.
I avoid the picturesque in flowers, sometimes making them larger than life, other times dissecting and rearranging them. I work for images that show the spirit of and the struggle
for life. I present flowers to the observer not as dainty objects of decoration but as powerful symbols of life: the origin of life and the life energy in ourselves and our environment.
Art does not always come from such deep soul searching. Several years ago a dear friend asked me to do a painting in her bathtub. What kind of image do you put in a bathtub?
That was a challenge and the first of the Waterflower Series!

In Eastern culture the lotus depicts the
multi-dimensional nature of the mind.
The fertile, marshy areas where the
lotus grow represent the Earth where the
mind can realize its highest states of
awareness.
